da poker: Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Sandro has claimed that he left the club too early, per Globo Esporte via Sport Witness.
What’s he said?
da esoccer bet: The 30-year-old is currently playing for Genoa following something of a nomadic career after his Spurs exit.
He spent four years at White Hart Lane between 2010 and 2014 but left to join QPR, before moves to West Bromwich Albion on loan, Antalyaspor, Benevento on loan, Genoa and a loan move to Udinese.
And Sandro, who won 17 caps for Brazil, says he was too quick to call time on his Spurs career.
He said: “I regret leaving Tottenham. I had three more years of contract, had just renewed. I rushed.
“I was one of those loved by the fans, by the team. One of those with more time at the club, four seasons. At that time everyone was young. (Harry) Kane, (Christian) Eriksen, (Jan) Vertonghen. (Mauricio) Pochettino had just arrived. I rushed.”
The big fat Tottenham quiz of 2019 – how much do you remember about the last year at Spurs?
Changed destiny
Who knows what might have happened had Sandro stayed at the club?
He departed in the summer before the 2014/15 season and Spurs struggled to find a proper defensive midfielder in the Brazilian’s absence. Benjamin Stambouli was signed as was Eric Dier but the former flopped and the latter was primarily played as a defender in his first season.
The following season, though, saw Dier, who has now won 40 caps for England, start to play in a defensive position.
He made 17 appearances in the role in 16/17, before making 33 in 17/18.
If Sandro had stayed at the club, one has to believe that there would have been no need for Dier to step out of defence into the role in which he initially thrived under manager Mauricio Pochettino.
His departure may well have been the best thing to happen to the former Sporting Lisbon man.
Meanwhile, Spurs are monitoring a striker in electric form who wants a move to England.
