da betcris: He’s just signed a new contract extension at current club West Ham, which will see him remain at the Olympic Stadium until 2021. And you can’t help but feel that Aaron Cresswell is now one of the Hammers’ most important players, even with the likes of Dimitri Payet writing the headlines week after week.
da bet7k: Many were close to outrage when the former Ipswich Town man failed to even make England’s provisional 26-man squad and you have to agree with some when you look at what he has achieved over the past few years. 47 appearances this season makes him one of West Ham’s most active players and his position on the team-sheet week-after-week is never in threat. It’s not hard to see why.
He’s defensively apt, has a good yard of pace and assists going forward when needed too. And who can forget that gorgeous strike against Leicester City last term, which could have knocked the wind out of the Foxes at one of the most important parts of their season.
And still, he can’t get into the England squad.
It’s a little tough on the Englishman as the full-back positions are contested so fiercely by the likes of Baines, Bertrand, Rose and Gibbs – it will be forever difficult for him to ever breakthrough the ranks. But after England’s utterly dismal performance out in France, does the former Tractor Boy finally deserve a shot in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers? You’d have to argue that he does.
While England were pretty poor all over the park out in France, the full-backs were arguably the best players on the pitch, which doesn’t really help Cresswell’s cause. But collectively, the Three Lions weren’t good enough and there is little doubt that whoever comes in for Roy Hodgson will make changes where necessary.
The new boss needs to be braver in his team selection and if that means justifying Cresswell’s selection then so be it. He might not play for a top-four-side just yet, but that is irrelevant and one thing England manager-after-England-manager seem to rely on. Why not risk Danny Drinkwater when the likes of Jordan Henderson and Jack Wilshire have barely played a game all season? It seems all Cresswell needs is a break.
All the boxes are ticked for the 26-years-old and the stage is set going into next season. The Hammers have got Europa League football to look forward to whilst they also have the upcoming move to the Olympic Stadium on the horizon. There is no better club for the full-back to be at going into pre-season and his time will come when in regards to the international stage – it must do.
No player can do so well and play at such a good level and continually be ignored. The new England gaffer just needs to take a chance on him and perhaps, he will make the position his own.
